6063-o aluminum

6063-O aluminum belongs to the Al-Mg-Si series aluminum alloys, with magnesium (0.45%-0.9%) and silicon (0.2%-0.6%) as the main alloying elements. It achieves high ductility and low hardness through annealing treatment (O temper).

6063-O aluminum alloy is the annealed temper of the 6000 series 6063 alloy, characterized by high ductility, medium strength, and excellent anodized surface finish.

This alloy exhibits good corrosion resistance (further enhanced after anodizing), and is widely used in architectural extrusions, including window and door frames, railings, and decorative profiles.

6063 O Aluminum Chemical Composition

6063 aluminum belongs to the Al-Mg-Si family, mainly used to improve extrusion performance. Its nominal composition is 98.9 wt% Al, 0.70 wt% Mg, and 0.40 wt% Si.

According to the standards of the Aluminum Association of the United States, its composition range is: Al: 97.5–99.35 wt%, Mg: 0.45–0.90 wt%, Si: 0.20–0.60 wt%, with Fe ≤ 0.35 wt%, and contains trace amounts of Cr, Cu, Mn, Ti, Zn, and other elements, with a total maximum content up to 0.15 wt%.

6063 Aluminum Annealed Temper (O Temper)

"O" temper indicates a fully annealed condition, in which the alloy is softened to achieve maximum ductility. In this state, 6063-O has the lowest strength among similar tempers but the highest formability, making it ideal for complex extrusion processing and subsequent anodizing.

6063 O Aluminum Corrosion Resistance and Surface Treatment

6063-O demonstrates good corrosion resistance due to its low copper content and stable Al₂O₃ film formation. After anodizing, the uniform and thicker oxide layer further enhances its weather resistance and appearance, making it an ideal choice for exterior architectural components.

6063 O Aluminum Manufacturing and Processing

  • Annealing: Heat at 413 °C (775 °F) for 2–3 hours, controlled cooling (~30 °C/h) to 260 °C, then air cooling to reach O temper.
  • Forming: Excellent hot and cold formability, suitable for processing into complex shapes and thin-walled profiles.
  • Welding: Good weldability using traditional TIG and MIG methods; properties in the heat-affected zone can return to O temper, but may be restored through re-annealing or aging treatment.

6063 O Aluminum Processing and Surface Finishing

  • Forming Processes: Supports cutting, bending, stamping, welding (with controlled heat-affected zone), and other processing methods.
  • Surface Treatments: Common techniques include anodizing, electrophoretic coating, and spraying; customizable colors (e.g., wood grain, titanium gold) and matte/glossy effects are available.
  • Heat Treatment Strengthening: O temper aluminum plates can be strengthened through quenching and aging treatment, but attention must be paid to the natural aging effect (strength degradation at room temperature over time).

6063 O Aluminum Applications

6063-O is the preferred material for architectural aluminum extrusions, especially suitable for scenarios where appearance and surface treatment are crucial. Common applications include:

  • Door and window frames, curtain walls, and eaves profiles.
  • Railings, handrails, and decorative trims for both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Extruded tubing and channel steel used in irrigation, furniture, and lightweight structural components.
